Sin and death were defeated with the resurrection! Christ had all authority given him by His Father, and He used it to forgive sins, and to cast out evil spirits. This was to happen on the Day of Pentecost, when the power of God's Spirit would become operative in the life of the church. No, what happens is that this new disposition given to the Christian directs his faculties in an entirely different way. God has made us alive.He has renewed us. The power for this struggle came from God through Christ by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. "Is that really possible for us?" David believed that God's goodness followed him and also anticipated him. The apostle Peter, in the first sermon delivered under the auspices of the Christian church on that first Day of Pentecost at Jerusalem, says in Acts 2:24, "whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.". It must be one or the other. God's goodness never ran out, because David could go to God in prayer and receive all he needed. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. Paul wants us to know that if we have believed in Christ, it did not come from human will power or reasoning. He knows that they have believed, that they have trusted in Jesus Christ, and that they have been sealed by the Holy Spirit. No one can say for sure what his thorn was, but it probably was a physical affliction of some sort. God is a supernatural God and if it worked for me and it will work for you. And then, added to this, there is life as we know it in this world, with its changing circumstances. The Creation was a significant manifestation of the power of God, because all He had to do was have Christ, the Spokesman of His Father, say, "Let there be light," and there was light. In Paul's eyes, preaching is of no value unless it is in "demonstration of the Spirit and of power.". What can we do to remove any obstacles of weakness that we tend to inadvertently place in our own way? Acts 5:12-29. Hundreds of years later, Isaiah reminded the doubting Israelites about the same principle. But the trajectory of God’s presence in our lives is fixed by the love of God. Whenever the scriptures speak of the Almighty God, we need to train ourselves to see the whole Godhead in that statement. This is the opposite of death. Mark 12:30 Isaiah 40:31 But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. I Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. He has the power to mold us more and more into his image. A similar description of God's power is given by Isaiah in his prophecy. Be holy for God is holy. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18:may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19:and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. And, do we realize that because it has begun it will continue until we find ourselves faultless and blameless, without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing in the presence of God in the glory? I Samuel 30:6 Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. You and I were dead, lifeless. Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He cuts—he allows pain in our lives—so that we can truly be conduits of his power. We can advance spiritual strengthening by quietness and confidence in response to God. The world as a whole is still cut off. Amen.”. Principle 1: The process of Christian conversion and ultimate salvation is a demonstration of the power of God in us. We had no appetite spiritually, no understanding spiritually. The Power of HIS PRESENCE. Some of this power He has entrusted to mankind to exercise dominion over the earth. So Paul continues to help us with an illustration of it. The power of God is the beginning and the end of salvation; everything is of Him and of His power. In the preaching of Christ crucified, God called people by opening their eyes of faith to believe the gospel. Paul is not using words here in a haphazard manner; there is a definite gradation in their use. Running … There is a new power working in him and guiding his faculties. Verse 19 tells us, ". Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying: "I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously! “He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, 27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him” (. 2019.04.03.SERMON.POWER POWER POWER William Akehurst, HSWC POWERFUL POINTS TO PONDER: 1. Jesus was going to build his church. It can work in us to stamp out temptation. Do we truly realize the exceeding greatness of His power in us? We cannot hope to become alive; we are either alive or else we are dead. He prays here, that the Ephesians will know what is the "exceeding greatness"—not only the greatness, but the exceeding greatness. God has the power to forgive and defeat sin. It is completely different. That reason was that God had indicated to them the path of truth and safety, but they chose not to follow it, and refused to put confidence in Him. So the difference between the sinner and the Christian, between the unbeliever and the believer, is not that the believer, the Christian, has certain faculties which the other person lacks. When we find ourselves pressured by the enemy, our first response is usually to pray that God will change them, when our best response would be that God would change us and enable us to overcome. If all we have is theory, philosophy, theology and other intellectual arguments, we will never have a faith that changes the world. The Bible tells us that Jesus purchased for us the very presence of God, and our spiritual connection to Him is irrevocable! God has given us new life. So here is the important question: what does all of this mean for you and me? Let us consider several supporting statements in Paul's epistles that show this spiritual power in us. Paul preached the "fullness" of the gospel so that they could have the fullness of life that Jesus promised them. Revelation 19:6 And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! Five glimpses of what became of Jesus after he died. When we consider our frail bodies with seeds of decay in them, we know that they are susceptible to illnesses, and we find it almost impossible to believe, or even to imagine, that we could enjoy a state of glory. Romans 8:1-5 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. It's God's Word that transforms us from defenceless ordinary people into powerful warriors, armed and dangerous. It is not surprising that the Old Testament writers refer so frequently to death and its terrible power. It is a perfect analogy of what happens to us spiritually. When Paul preached to them, he did not just share human opinion and philosophy. He has the power to make all things new. Our faith must rest solely on the power of our God to save us from our sin and to deliver us from evil in this world, and to bring us to our home in Heaven. Rather, his message was discernible by the power of God. Why is that? That is the first step to seeing and believing God's power. He was actually risking his life to obey the Lord. In Ephesians 1, Paul deals with our problems and our difficulties. So when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives He brings with Him the power of God to enable us to serve God in “the power(“strength”) of His might” (Ephesians 6:10). The Bible says that the power that raised Christ from the tomb is working in us and is offered to us. Athletes desire power and the ability to accomplish the things that they want to accomplish. But 22:12-16 makes it clear who the Almighty Alpha and Omega is. Through God's Holy Spirit, we are empowered to receive and understand Godly knowledge, enabling us to develop righteous godly character and a new spiritual disposition, directing our existing faculties in an entirely different way, enabling us to become a new creation, connected miraculously to the body of Christ. Some talk about the power in someone's personality. First, the greatness of the power in and of itself, and second, how we can be sure that this great power is working in us. Obedience produces blessing. But if we are Christians that is no longer true; we have been made alivetogether with Christ, the life principle has come in, and we have been, and are being, renewed. No one is able to advise Him or give Him anything; He is everything in and of Himself; He is everlasting in might and strength and power. It is the power by which we can develop the holy, righteous, perfect character, which is God's purpose for having put humanity on the earth, so that He could reproduce Himself. The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. He has called people for salvation out of a world that is completely (except for us) cut off from God since Adam. This truth is fundamental to an understanding of the Christian. With whom can we compare Him? He would walk in the way of God's truth and avoid the enemy's way of deception. Paul is trying to make the Ephesians (and us too) see and realize—that the greatness of God's power is in us, what He is doing is in us. It will always be totally inadequate, but he tries. Yet he did not rant and rave against his enemies, and seek to destroy them; rather, he wept for them, and turned them over to God. So today I’d like to address … The closer we are to God, the more we feel the power of the Holy Spirit working in our life. GET COMMITTED TO GOD IN EVERY WAY When you get committed to God, God gets committed to you – your life, dreams, goals, career, marriage, family life, success, academics, job and so on and so forth. Dear Lord, thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to guide us in the way you want us to go. It is the love of God placed within us. His Word was enough; and He made everything out of nothing. He made physical things; it was not spiritual things that He was making. The church was going to advance. It was with a "mighty hand and outstretched arm"that He brought His people out of Egypt and demonstrated His power in giving them the Promised Land. It affects our hearts, it affects our minds, and it affects our will. What is new is a new disposition. He still sees the same bottle, yet it is not the same. So, why do we doubt Him? How can we access the power of God's Word? ). Our calling, conversion, and ultimate salvation are concrete demonstrations of God's power. 10:13) 2) The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us (Rom. He tells us that God has placed His Spirit with in us. No human can make himself a Christian; God alone makes Christians. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation … The preaching of the gospel is God’s power and strength that He uses to tear lost people away from the enemy and to make them members of Christ’s church. It is GOD's POWER that makes us HIS CHILD. “… and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.”. The universe is dying, and it is only God who can sustain it. God, by His mighty action, puts a new disposition into our mind and heart. The world would collapse if God, by His supernatural power, ceased to sustain it and keep it going; that has even been proven scientifically. It is mysterious, it is miraculous, and it is incomprehensible, but we know the effects, we appreciate the results, and we are aware of the fact that it has taken place. It is understandable that Paul would consider his thorn in the flesh a hindrance to his performing of a more effective ministry, and that he would repeatedly appeal to God for its removal. 1:14) 4) God chastens us for our good (Heb. Has there been anything more momentous than a manifestation of God's power in the flood, when God opened the windows of heaven and the mountains were all covered with water? ", Let us analyze this new phrase, because it is one of the greatest that Paul uses. The first thing then that is true of us when we receive the Holy Spirit at baptism is that we came to the end of our death—we were dead in trespasses and sins. Whatever may be true of our experience, whatever may be true of the world and its darkness, whatever may be true of the seeds of decay and of illness and of death that are in our bodies, and however great is the power of the enemy, we can be certain and confident that nothing can prevent the carrying out of God's purpose with respect to us.
